Coffee came to the Caribbean soil with the help of Chevalier Gabriel Mathiew de Clieu. This man brought sprouts of the “noble tree” to Martinique in the Caribbean in the year 1720. This started the spread of coffee plantations in the Caribbean Islands, including Jamaica. The French tried to plant the coffee trees in their area but they were not successful, these coffee trees cannot survive under frost. This world famous Blue Mountain coffee had its share of disappointments before. It even came to a point when the coffee industry in Jamaica almost came to a halt. First it was hurricane Gilbert, the land slide caused two years of no coffee production. Soon after the rebound, Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee found its way to be exported to Canada. However in 1944, after four years of shipping Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee to the largest importer, Canada cut off the importation. The reason was the decline in the quality of the Jamaican coffee.
The experience gave Jamaica the will to move on and make measures to correct the failures of the Coffee Industry. Soon the Coffee Industry Board was born setting standards by which Jamaican coffee is grown, harvested, processed and marketed. As a result of this genuine effort, a certified Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is now marked by great taste and impeccable quality.
