ESPRESSO COFFEE
People of Milan, Italy are known to be coffee lovers and this could be the reason why Caffe Espresso, or Espresso coffee, was first developed in this place. The word “espresso” means express, it is an Italian word that means immediate or fast. Coffee should be served hot and fast to the customers. With that in mind, espresso coffee has been the popular type of coffee preparation in southern Europe, more particularly in Italy, Portugal, Spain and France. In the United States, espresso coffee was brought in by Cuban refugees in South Florida. However, it is in the cities of San Francisco (particularly the North Beach area), Philadelphia, New York and Chicago where espresso coffee has been well patronized. In the 1990’s, coffee chains became popular. Coffee chains like Starbucks, Dunn Bros Coffee, Seattle’s Best Coffee and many more made espresso coffee popular in the United States. The remarkable global growth of coffee chains carried along with it the growing number of espresso coffee lovers.

What is espresso coffee? Coffee based drinks such as lattes, cappuccinos, macchiato and mochas can never be complete without espresso. All of the mentioned coffee preparations are part of espresso coffee. These are concentrated coffees, brewed by forcing very hot but not boiling water under high pressure. The espresso coffee drips out of the porta-filter with a deep reddish-brown color, very thick consistency and the crema, the foam that floats on the surface, is at least 10-30% of the beverage. The crema is composed of vegetable oils, proteins and sugar and has elements of foam colloid and emulsion. The crema is an important part of the espresso, without it, coffee will simply be a dark and thick coffee and not espresso.

There are four elements needed to make a perfect espresso. First, the coffee blend must undergo perfect grinding. With the use of a coffee grinder, the barista will place just the right amount of beans that will be used. Coffee is considered fresh right after it is ground. After grinding, the volatile oils which are inside the beans are exposed will make the ground coffee stale if left standing for a long time. For this reason it is important to immediately do the extraction of espresso right after grinding. The second important element is the blend or blending. To blend means to mix certain types of coffee to be able to acquire the desired taste and aroma.

Third, an espresso machine must be used. A machine is designed to do the work of extracting the perfect espresso using pressure of between 120 to 265 psi and hot water. And lastly, it must be done by professional and skilled hands. Barista is the name given to the espresso machine operator. With all of the four essential elements considered, you may now enjoy the rich taste and aroma of espresso coffee.
